For almost as long as I have had a serious interest in the Soviet space program, I have enjoyed Soviet space art. Three decades ago, I was fortunate enough to get some postcard collections of Soviet space art from a friend of mine living in Lithuania (then part of the USSR), which I recently rediscovered while searching through my archives. One of those collections of Soviet space art I have already shared earlier (see “Space Art: Star Way of Humanity”). I also found among these postcards a lot of artwork from the famous Russian space artist, Andrei Sokolov (1931-2007). In addition to painting scenes of historical events from the Soviet space program (see “Space Art: The Soviet Space Program by Andrei Sokolov“), Sokolov also had a large body of work which can be described as “space fantasy” depicting space exploration in our far future. Presented here are a sample of these paintings.
